If your ready to plant acorns for the spring head on over to http://www.Acorno.com Acorno Acorns sells Red Oak Acorn Seedlings and White Oak Acorn Seedlings. All of our planting acorns have been water-tested and are ready to be planted anywhere in the USA. You can buy acorn seed packets from us or purchase acorns by the pound. Our acorns cost $7 per pound and include 50-60 White Oak Seedlings or 60-80 Red Oak Seedlings. Our acorns for planting are currently sprouting and ready to be put in the ground. We recommend waiting for the last frost before planting your acorns. A tree protective tube is recommended for keeping squirrels, deer, and rabbits away from your baby trees. Consider starting your acorn seedlings indoors using a stryofoam cup with soil and moss as a starter. As the stem grows and your nearing mid-April bring your acorn seedlings outdoors and ready them for planting. Dig a hole 6-8 inches deep and cover the hole with top soil and moss. Planting acorns is easy and fun to watch Oak trees grow.

Pine Needles for Sale

March 21st, 2010

Acorno is now selling Pine Needles for Sale Our Pine Needles for Sale are from the Eastern White Pine Tree and are short leaf pine needles collected in Vermont. Pine Needles are very popular for using as mulch. Get ready for spring gardening and order pine needle mulch. Pine Needle Mulch or Pine Straw can be ordered by the box. We are currently selling a USPS large flat rate box filled with pine needles for only $30 and this price includes shipping to the USA and Canada. You will find that are pine needles are picked fresh and only picked when you order.

EHow.com has a great article on how to mulch a garden with pine needles. Many people don’t like pine needles in their grass because decaying pine needles give off an acid that puts holes and patches in your turf. But, pine needles are useful in areas of your garden where the plants appreciate the acid the decaying pine needles give off. Plants and vegetables such as tomatoes, onions, garlic, and mint all grow better with the acid that decaying pine needles send off. Pine needles lend a rich brown surface with fine texture to the areas they cover. Pine Needle Mulch also helps with weeds in your garden. It is hard for weeds to grow in pine needles. Go to a forest and look at ground covered in pine needles. You will notice no weeds present in the ground covered with pine needles. Gardeners hate weeds and pine needles are great for preventing weeds growing in your garden. If weeds do grow in the pine needle mulch they are easy to take out because most likely they are pretty loose with the pine needles as a covering.

Depending on how much space you need to cover, 1 or 2 boxes of our Eastern Pine Needles may be sufficient for a smaller space such as 5-7 feet to cover 3 inches of ground with pine needles. Our pine needs are short leaf and will work well in almost any part of the USA.

Ordering Acorns for Your Fall Wedding

March 11th, 2010

Spring is almost here and we get a lot of call this time of year from brides planning their fall wedding. Should we order acorns now or wait till the end of August when the acorns have caps on them. My answer is always waiting till the end of August. If your wedding display or decoration won’t take long to put together and your wedding is at the end of September, then wait till the middle or end of August to order your acorns. The reason I say to wait is because August and September are the main harvesting months for acorns. Your acorns will be fresh, either green or a light brown. The caps will still be attached to the acorns. The reason caps fall of acorns is because acorns are living organisms. If the caps don’t call off when the acorns fall off the trees, then eventually within 1 or 2 months the caps will fall off the acorns. This is how nature works. The acorn is living and growing and the caps will eventually fall off due to growth, wind, and animals. I suggest you wait till harvest to order your acorns from www.Acorno.com since your acorns won’t require much maintenance. If your not using your acorns right away then I suggest storing your acorns in a zip-lock bag in your refrigerator. This will prevent growing and will also prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to molding. Acorns are bountiful in August and the fall. Don’t worry we will have plenty of acorns available for your special fall wedding. Acorns truly give meaning to a fall wedding in spirit and display.

Springtime Acorn Crafts

March 11th, 2010

Spring is coming and acorn crafts become more popular. You can make many fun craft projects using acorns. Acorno.com sells acorns with caps for your craft projects. Our craft acorns are glossed and the caps are neatly glued onto the acorn to create a beautiful Red Oak Acorn ready for use with your acorn craft projects. One of my favorite acorn craft projects is the acorn picture frame or mirror. See: http://www.oneprettything.com/images/posts/mosaic6154703.jpg

It’s pretty easy to create an acorn frame and mirror. All you need is acorn caps and glue them onto the mirror or around your picture frame. The acorn caps create a rustic look to the frame and are great additions to log cabin homes or rustic areas. An acorn picture frame would look great on a maple shelf or desk. Here is a picture of an acorn cap mirror: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_IqImnkrxmzo/RyC_jV-ZVCI/AAAAAAAAAV4/x_hLAguDf0s/s400/ft_nov03msl04_l.jpg

I love how pretty the acorn mirror looks hanging on a wood tiled wall. As you can see creating acorn cap mirrors and picture frames are very easy. All you need is a few hundred-acorn caps to start, a mirror or old picture frame. I am sure a lot of you have old picture frames you don’t use. This is a great craft project to make use of picture frames you don’t use or mirrors that are still in your garage or attic.

Martha Stewart has an excellent acorn napkin holder article on her website: http://www.marthastewart.com/article/acorn-craft  You can create an awesome acorn napkin holder with cap acorns, wood, and wood glue. Acorn napkin holders are especially popular for fall weddings. Image an acorn napkin holder on each of your wedding guests tables. They cost less than $1.00 each to make. You can buy Red Oak Acorns from www.Acorno.com at $7 per pound and have enough acorns to make 25 napkin holders. A wedding reception of 100 guests will only cost $50 with acorns and wood to create enough acorn napkin holders.

Add Acorns to your Deer Minerals Spring-Time Feeding

March 11th, 2010

The best time to feed deer minerals is during the winter and spring when bucks are growing antlers and does are nursing fawns. Hunters who go to great lengths to manage deer on their property will invest in a good mineral supplement to grow larger racks. According to a mineral expert, there isn’t a mineral market on the market that is going to turn a small buck into a larger buck. However, feeding deer minerals overtime especially during the winter and spring months will make the deer healthier overall and the bucks will produce larger racks through mineral supplementation. Minerals contain sodium, which is good for deer and growing racks. Deer lose a lot of sodium during the springtime due to eating more available foods with nutrients. The deer will consume more nutrients and then look for foods with salt. The deer will urinate more often and therefore losing much-needed sodium. Replacing this sodium loss with minerals in a powder form or liquid will help replenish the much-needed nutrients and minerals for strong rack growth. Acorns are good to use in minerals because they are high in fat and carbs and low in protein. It is best to use crushed acorns or ground acorns blended in with your minerals.

How to Plant Acorn Seeds

March 1st, 2010

You can plant Acorn seeds and grow an Oak tree. The two most popular species of Oak trees to plant or the Red Oak Tree and the White Oak Tree. All you need to plant Oak trees is acorns (acorn seeds) An acorn seed is the actual acorn, nut. The acorn is a living organism whether it is still attached to the tree, on the ground, or not connected to the cap.

Your acorns need to be not dried out or heated in order to germinate. It is best to keep acorns in a shady area or in a refridgerator. If your storing acorns in your fridge make sure the temperature is at 40 degrees for Red Oak Acorns. White Oak Acorns can still sprout at temps of between 36 and 39 degrees. Red Oak Acorns need about 1,000 hours of cold or 42 days while White Oak Acorns need less. White Oak Acorns mature in 1 season, the season of collection. It is best to wait to the following spring for Red Oak Acorns. Red Oak Acorns mature in 2 seasons. Keep your Red Oak Acorns outdoors in the winter or in the fridge to allow stratification (cooling).

You will want to plant your acorn seeds in April or after the last frost. Make sure you find acorn seeds free of holes and insects. Plump and rot-free acorns are the best to use for planting Oak trees. Place the acorn seeds in a loose potting soil in one gallon pots. The root will grow quickly to the bottom of the containers. Your containers should have holes in the bottom to allow for drainage. Place your acorns on their sides at a depth of one half to one times the width of the acorn. Keep the pots from freezing. Keep the soil moist.

How to transplant your acorn seeds:

Don’t allow an oak seedlings tap root to grow out of the container bottom and into the soil below. This will break the tap root. If possible, seedlings should be transplanted as soon as the first leaves open and become firm but before extensive root development works. Take the root ball and place it in the planting hole. The planting hole should be twice as wide and deep as the pot and root ball. Fill the hole with soil and soak. Check back often to make sure animals and critters don’t attack your Oak tree.
